The highly contested special election for Assembly District 17 race between battling San Francisco County Supervisors Matt Haney and David Campos came to a close with Haney defeating Campos by a larger margin than expected. In the end, voters elected Haney by nearly a 2/3’s margin to fill the seat left vacant by David Chiu who resigned in late 2021 to become City Attorney of San Francisco. Calpeek shared reports of Campos comparing his campaign to that of what Ukrainians are going through – a statement that came with backlash.
