Assembly candidate David Campos compared his race against San Francisco Supervisor Matt Haney as “fighting and running like Ukrainians.” The comparison, which was caught in a 14-second video clip and posted on twitter for the world to see, was made at a volunteer mobilization event. Needless to say, the statement raised eyebrows and brought swift condemnation on Twitter. In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Campos claimed to never have made a comparison to what’s happening in the Ukraine, but rather what it’s like to be an underdog. Campos’ response added fuel to the social media firestorm as Campos explained his comment and his opponent took to Instagram to call out his opponent’s comments as being “offensive”.
