California Takes Aim at Gun Industry

On Tuesday, Governor Newsom signed into law a bill that targets the firearms industry.  Under AB 1594, a firearm industry standard of conduct will allow local governments, state Department of Justice, and gun violence survivors to sue for egregious violations of state sales and marketing violations.  Under the new law that takes effect on July 1, 2023, the gun industry can be held accountable for harm caused by their products.  “Nearly every industry is held liable when people are hurt or killed by their products – guns should be no different,” said Newsom.  In addition to AB 1594, the Governor has also signed into law two other bills – one that targets firearm advertising to minors and another that adds more restrictions to ghost guns.
